Donaldson helps a mineral-water producer avoid costly downtime

Industry: Mineral water

Problem: the producer found itself in a difficult position due to the threat of a failure to fulfill an order through the fault of a filter supplier that was unable to deliver the necessary filter elements.

Solution: the use of the following Donaldson LifeTec™ process filters:

  • 30-inch filters LifeTec PP100 N 1 micron, P7 with polypropylene filter material;
  • 30-inch filters LifeTec PES WN 0.45 microns, P7 with polyethersulfone filter material.

Situation

A leading mineral-water producer in the south of France found itself in a difficult position due to the threat of a failure to fulfill an order. Because the current supplier of filtration equipment was unable to deliver the necessary filter elements on time, the producer faced the prospect of reducing volume and shifting production schedules, as well as disrupting customers' plans. Management quickly decided to consider other suppliers of filtration equipment.

pH-balanced mineral water, intended for infants, pregnant women and other pediatric applications, including the production of infant formula and use in hospitals, has appealed to a large number of consumers. The absence of a beloved water on store shelves would not go unnoticed.

The products of the current filtration-equipment supplier provided the filtration efficiency the producer needed, but because of supply disruptions it often found itself in a precarious position. When the time came to change filters, equipment availability was a serious concern even with careful planning and forecasting.

Solution

The mineral-water producer turned to Donaldson to select an equivalent filtration solution and quickly contacted the company's representative in the region. Many years of experience in the field of filtration for beverage production allowed Donaldson to recommend the optimal filtration system to the producer in the shortest possible time. Thanks to extensive warehouse stocks, Donaldson was able to quickly deliver the recommended filters to the customer's facility.

Donaldson recommended that the mineral-water producer use the new, revolutionary LifeTec process filters in the system. A set of 30-inch LifeTec PP100 N filters with polypropylene filter material and 30-inch LifeTec PES WN filters with polyethersulfone filter material was delivered to the plant. These filters, containing up to 20 percent more filter material compared with similar products from competitors, are characterized by an increased flow at a low pressure drop. The rigid design of the filter's support cage prevents the deformation that leads to damage of the filter material. This increases reliability and extends the service life of the filters.

Results

The service life of the LifeTec filters at the plant was six weeks, which corresponds to the output of approximately 3,700 tons of mineral water. The producer managed to fulfill its obligations to customers, ensure reliable removal of microorganisms and establish the output of high-quality mineral water. The producer of pH-balanced mineral water placed orders for the next deliveries of LifeTec filtration products and secured the support of a reliable partner in the form of Donaldson.

Arguments in favor of Donaldson products
